Scheherazade
SCHEHERAZADE — Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (ballet)
About Performance
The Shah Shahryar rests in his chamber. His brother, the Shah Zeman, is entertained by the harem girls with song and dance. Shahryar is interested only in his favorite, Zobeide, but Zeman suspects her fidelity. Under Zeman's influence, Shahryar announces he will go hunting, and the harem girls conspire to have Zobeide approach him and wish him luck on the hunt, to dispel any suspicion. Once the men leave, the girls bribe the chief eunuch guarding the harem to open the door.
Black slaves enter the harem and begin an orgy with Shahryar's wives. Zobeide chooses the most handsome among them for herself. Suddenly Shahryar returns. Zeman's suspicion is confirmed. A death sentence falls upon the slaves and eunuchs. Zobeide begs the Shah for mercy and pleads her faithful love. Though he hesitates for a moment, Shahryar, to save his honor, sacrifices his love. Finding no way out, Zobeide takes her own life in the Shah's embrace.
